FAQ’s

  • Where do the oysters in your products come from?

All of our oysters are sourced from local Maine sea farmers. If you look at the packaging, you’ll notice a QR code—scan that, and you’ll find out exactly what farm your oysters were harvested from!

  • Do your oyster products require refrigeration?

Our raw shucked oyster meats are perishable and must be refrigerated at a recommended 41°F (or below).

Our chowders are prepared in 2 formats—refrigerated and frozen. Our refrigerated chowders are vacuum-sealed, and can last up to 60 days in your refrigerator, unopened. Once opened, it is recommend you consume the chowder within 3 days. Our frozen chowder will last unopened in your freezer for up to 1 year!

  • What's the shelf life on your products?

    Shucked Oyster Meats (Jarred)

Your oysters are freshly shucked the day they are jarred. On average, the oysters are good for 14 days from the “Date Shucked.” (Please feel free to email jacqueline@noreasteroysterco.com if you are unable to interpret the writing on the jars).

    Oyster Chowder (Refrigerated)

Our refrigerated oyster chowder will last up to 60 days, unopened, in your refrigerator. Once opened, it is recommended you finish your chowder within 3 days.

    Oyster Chowder (Frozen)

Our frozen oyster chowder lasts up to 1 year in your freezer.

  • Can I eat the shucked oyster meats raw?

We do not recommend eating pre-shucked oysters (the ones we sell in our cute little jars) raw. This isn’t so much a health concern as it is a quality issue. Yes, shucked oysters are amazing, but these babies are meant to be cooked! Chilled pre-shucked oysters can be susceptible to temperature abuse during transportation, and thus, we strongly recommend cooking the oysters to 165°F using one of our delicious recipes!

  • Do your products contain gluten?

All of our current products are gluten free. We are in the process of applying for our gluten-free certification!

  • Are your products safe to eat while pregnant?

We recommend consulting with your doctor before consuming our products if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or looking to conceive.

  • What allergens do your oyster products contain?

First and foremost, all of our products contain shellfish (oysters), so please stay clear if you have an allergy! Our shucking facility is located in a larger processing facility that also processes crustaceans (crab and lobster) as well as finfish. Customers with severe allergies to any of the listed allergens are advised to exercise caution and consult with a healthcare professional.

  • Are the shucked (jarred) oysters packed in water?

Yes, the oysters are packed in a mix of their own brine and water. After shucking the oysters, we rinse and pack them in water to reduce shell fragments and grit. This makes them easier to cook with, and prevents you from getting that off-putting *crunch* of a shell when eating your oysters.
